Paris Saint Germain star Kylian Mbappe is keen on joining Spanish giants Real Madrid, according to The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana.

The report says that Mbappe and Madrid are in contact over a possible deal in the future.

The France forward had been widely tipped to join Real Madrid in the summer transfer window last year but he ended up extending his contract with the French club in May.

"I wanted to announce that I have chosen to extend my contract at Paris St Germain, and I am of course very happy. I am convinced that here I can continue to grow within a club that gives itself all the means to perform at the highest level," the 23-year-old said in a club statement.

"I am also very happy to be able to continue playing in France, the country where I was born, grew up and flourished."

PSG signed Mbappe from AS Monaco in 2017 in a deal reported to be about 180 million euros.

Real's bid to sign Mbappe was rejected by the Parisian club, who appeared prepared to lose him on a free transfer this year.

Reports also claimed the Spanish champions had offered PSG as much as 200 million euros for the Frenchman.

It must be noted that Mbappe made his return from a post-World Cup holiday but Paris Saint-Germain went down 1-0 away to Rennes in Ligue 1 on Sunday, a result which leaves them just three points clear at the top of the table halfway through the season.

Rennes captain Hamari Traore scored the game´s only goal in the 65th minute in the rain in Brittany to condemn PSG to a second successive away league loss after they went down 3-1 at second-placed Lens on New Year´s Day.

Prior to that they had gone unbeaten through their first 23 matches this season in all competitions and this latest setback gives their rivals hope in the title race.
